Enhancing Active Queue Management (AQM) for Combating Wireless Losses

Patent
IP00431

Key Problem and Market Opportunity

  • With a constant growth in wireless bandwidth demand, the network switch/router market has been projected to have a double digits growth.
  • Active Queue Management (AQM) is a control algorithm that manages data packets in the transmission buffer of an internet switch/router in order to minimize packet drops.
  • Traditional AQM algorithms are designed for wired network. However, they perform badly on wireless link because packet loss in wireless network is more commonly due to garbled packets and link disconnect, as wireless links are subject to interference, noise and propagation loss.
  • For example, RED (Random Early Detection), one of the most representative AQM algorithm recommended in RFC 2309 by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), fails to maintain a stable buffer occupancy under wireless loss.

Key Advantages of the Technology

技術部分滑塊2
技術部分滑塊3
  • Novel AQM mechanism named Integral Controller (IC) that maintains stability and low occupancy of data buffer in wireless network.  (Fig 2 & 3)
  • Stabilization problem is solved by employing the Internal Model principle from the Control Theory discipline. (Fig 1)
  • The algorithm is able to distinguish between wireless losses and congestion.
  • Reduce wireless packet error rate (WPER).
  • Provide a robust tracking of the backlog to a preset/tunable  reference level.

Potential Product and Services

  • Data communication devices
  • For example, routers, switches, wireless network interface cards
